The Center for Applied Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (CANTER) was founded in 2011 as a joint cooperation project between Munich University of Applied Sciences and the university hospitals of LMU and TUM. The aim of the center is to develop innovative methods and technologies for producing three‑dimensional tissue constructs that can be used in basic and pharmaceutical research, and in the long term also in clinical research. The focus lies on the generative fabrication of bio‑based and biological materials (biofabrication), as well as the detailed investigation of the structure and mechanical properties of healthy, pathologically altered, and laboratory‑generated tissues using high‑resolution analytical techniques.

CANTER brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers and consolidates expertise and infrastructure in joint projects with internal and external partners. Its facilities include two fully equipped molecular and cell biology laboratories, a modern biofabrication unit, and time‑lapse epi‑fluorescence and confocal microscopes. This infrastructure is complemented by the Laboratory for Biophysics and Nanoanalytics (Clausen‑Schaumann), the Laboratory for Multiphoton Imaging (Hellerer), the Laser Center (H. Huber), the Biotechnology Laboratory (R. Huber), as well as additional laboratories at Munich University of Applied Sciences. Research facilities at the university hospitals of TUM and LMU are also closely integrated into the network.

CANTER is supported by an established cooperation network of engineers, medical professionals, and natural scientists. Joint research projects, teaching activities, and the supervision of theses and doctoral work form the foundation for close interdisciplinary collaboration, making the center an important hub in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
